Lady August by Becky Michaels
Publication Date: March 30, 2021
Paperback & eBook; 310 pages
Genre: Historical Romance/Regency
August Summer thinks she is a nobody until a London solicitor barges into her employer’s drawing room, revealing not only is she the daughter of an earl but a wealthy heiress as well. Optimistic about a new life, she travels to her ancestral home of Linfield Hall, only for her brother to banish her to London to live with her aunt, a dowager duchess with a reputation.
When Lord Bolton asks him to fetch his illegitimate daughter, solicitor Samuel Brooks does not expect himself to become so invested in the young woman’s debut after wanting nothing to do with dinners and balls before. But as August navigates her way through this new world of the British aristocracy, Brooks is the one who is most dazzled by her unexpected charms.
Since society demands every young girl must marry, August decides she will accept nothing less than someone’s heart in exchange for possession of her newfound fortune. Forced to reexamine his negative views of love and marriage or lose August forever, Brooks soon realizes his heart is the only thing in danger of becoming possessed.
Okay, Friend. Pull up a chair, grab your fave chocolate, and let’s talk about this book for a second. (Also, can I just point out that the author and Lady August look strikingly similar? Love love love.)
As much as I have enjoyed getting into the world of Regency, I have found that I am a bit picky as to how the author approaches the time period and the characters. Sometimes the details are not true to history, sometimes the story is just too far-fetched, and other times the characters are…wan. I’m not sure one can use “wan” to describe a lackluster character, but I have decided that “wan” is quite appropriate. So it was with high hopes and a little trepidation that I opened to the first page of Lady August. And by the time I reached the close of the Prologue, I was head-over-heels invested. Becky Michaels can WRITE, Y’all!
First off, her ability to set the scene is flippin’ brilliant. From the surrounding sights to the mannerisms of the characters, I had zero difficulty whatsoever in picturing the happenings. But the characters! Oh my happy stars, the characters. August is the type of female-lead that you fall for immediately, despite your desire to shake her by the shoulders on occasion. Her constant habit of making decisions without using her head made her wonderfully relatable for me, as did her little quirks and her humanity. I adored her spontaneity, her wild-girl spirit and her beautiful heart.
As for Samuel Brooks, he is the quintessential Regency hero, without being predictable. Does that make sense? He is exactly the kind of character that you hope appears opposite the female lead, but had none of the “expected”…conceit, maybe?…of the typical Regency male. He guards his heart for a reason, which the author explains, but you can’t help but be devoted to him. He is so good, and so kind and has the most marvelous wit! I loved getting to know him and am thrilled to carry both he and August with me, now that I have finished the book.
Which was such a bummer, by the way. Only the best books make you want to go into mourning after turning the last page, and Lady August had me reaching for the comfort cookies, for sure.
Bottom Line: Allow me to introduce you to August, Samuel and an author who needs to take up writing full time.
