Their lives are ones of quiet contemplation—and brutal murder.
Christmas Eve, 1176. Brother Maurice, monk of Fairmore Abbey, awaits the night prayer bell. But there is only silence. Cursing his fellow brother Cuthbert’s idleness, he seeks him out—and in the darkness, finds him brutally murdered.
Summoned from London to the isolated monastery on the Yorkshire Moors, Aelred Barling, clerk to the King’s justices, and his messenger Hugo Stanton, set about investigating the horrific crime. They quickly discover that this is far from a quiet monastic house. Instead, it seethes with bitter feuds, rivalries and resentments. But no sooner do they arrive than the killer strikes again—and again.
When Barling discovers a pattern to these atrocities, it becomes apparent that the murderer’s rampage is far from over. With everyone, including the investigators, now fearing for their lives, can Barling and Stanton unmask the culprit before more blood is spilled?
My Review: First of all, this review is waaaay overdue (because life), so I am so stinkin’ excited to finally be able to share this book with you all! (Also, just because I’m late to the party doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check out the other Book Bloggers below! They are all so good.)
Now, on to the main event!
Lately, I have been stepping out of my historical fiction comfort zone, and branching out a bit into the mystery genre. I used to love mysteries when I was a teen, and I have been having such fun exploring new-to-me mystery authors. But once in awhile, the incredible Amy from Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours throws me an historical mystery. Like, whaaa? Y’all, I didn’t even know such a thing existed until Amy came along. And now, thanks to E.M. Powell, I have a new (to me) genre, author and book to obsess over. Because I so, so thoroughly enjoyed this novel!
The author did such a beautiful job of setting the historical scene and plunking her readers right in the middle of the cacophony. From the merrymaking of London to the peaceful illusion of the monastery, I eagerly followed Barling and Stanton as they tried to solve the mysteries at hand. Barling and Stanton, by the way? Incredibly written, deeply complex characters that I absolutely adored. I was a puppet on the author’s strings as I watched the plot unfurl, completely helpless to walk away from the book as I just had to know the end! A marvelous novel, a definite recommend.
