Connected by love, divided by faith. A novel of faith, friendship, and betrayal set against the religious turbulence of 17th Century London.
England 1604
Two men, once friends, have long since gone their separate ways. But when the new King James commands a fresh translation of the Bible, their paths are fated to cross again.
For biblical scholar Richard Clarke, the chance to work on the new translation seems like a gift from God, a way back in from the cold where his friendship with Separatist Ben Kemp has kept him for many years. But Richard soon discovers there is a price to pay for his new-found favour, and that price is betrayal. Caught between love for his friend and his faith in his Church, Richard must make a decision that could cost him his soul.
Set against the background of the writing of the King James Bible, and inspired by true accounts of the community who became the Mayflower Pilgrims, The King James Men is a vivid portrayal of the religious struggles of the age, and the price of being true to your faith.
My Review: As I was growing up, the only Bible that my grandmother would read was the King James Bible. She owned other Bibles, but that one was her favorite. I was fascinated by it; by the language. By her love for it.
Flash forward a few years, and I’m a full-grown Tudor enthusiast with a massive love for Queen Elizabeth I. When I discovered that her heir, King James, was the driving force behind the King James Bible, learning more about that specific time era became my focus of study. When I heard about The King James Men by Samantha Grosser, I literally began stalking my mail carrier, waiting for this book to arrive. (Y’all think I’m kidding.) (I’m not even exaggerating.) And oh my gosh, did I love every. single. last. word.
First of all, if writing is not the author’s day job, it needs to be. Because a) she has an unbelievable talent for writing, b) the world needs more of her writing, and c) you need to buy 18 copies of this book to put under your Christmas tree. You don’t even need to put name tags on the books. Just start handing them out to random people, then joyfully shout, “I just made your whole holiday season!” when you do.
It’s the little things.
But back to the novel; you guys, it is just so good. The research done is incredible and the plot is true and believable to the time period. The characters! Oh my goodness, how I loved the characters. They were so wonderfully relatable, each with their own complex personalities and emotions that grew as the plot deepened. The plot itself was fast-paced, an intriguing blend of heart-in-your-throat, bitten nails, warm-fuzzies and air high-fives. (Please tell me that I am not the only one who high-fives the air when a book gets good.) (Sigh. I am so the only one.) Either way, rest-assured that this novel is wonderful and one that you will not want to miss, no matter which genre you prefer. A definite recommend!
