The Jinni’s Last Wish by Zenobia Neil
Publication Date: September 13, 2018
Paperback & eBook; 224 Pages
Genre: Historical Fiction/Fantasy
As a eunuch in the Ottoman Imperial Harem, Olin has already lost his home, his freedom, and his manhood. His only wish is for a painless death, until he meets Dark Star, a beautiful odalisque who promises to give him his deepest desire. He refuses to believe her claim to possess a jinni in a bottle. But when Dark Star is accused of witchcraft, Olin rubs the bottle in desperation and discovers she’s told the truth.
Olin becomes the jinni’s master to save Dark Star, but it’s not enough. In the complex world of the Topkapi Palace, where silk pillows conceal knives, sherbets contain poison, and jewels buy loyalty, no one is safe. With each wish, Olin must choose between becoming like the masters he detests or risk his life, his body, and his sanity to break the bonds that tie them all.
“Vividly imagined and achingly beautiful, this is the closest you’ll get to an Ottoman harem without a time machine.” — Jessica Cale, Editor of Dirty, Sexy History
“Sensual, magical, and meticulously researched, THE JINNI’S LAST WISH is a scrumptious read.” –Heather Webb, international bestselling author of Last Christmas in Paris.”
“Hauntingly sensual, The Jinni’s Last Wish is an erotic fever dream that lingers long after the last page.” — Mia Hopkins, author of Thirsty
My Review: Okay, first of all, can we just take a second to appreciate this author’s name? I was named after my grandmother (which is awesome, naturally) but Zenobia Neil was named after a warrior queen, Y’all. A warrior queen. (And the award for Bad Assery goes to…)
Now, let’s get on to The Jinni’s Last Wish. You guys, seriously. I loved this book so much. First of all, it is an historical fiction, set in a time period that I rarely…if ever…read about, personally. (Have you all read about an Ottoman harem? Me neither!) So that was so much fun for me; not only to discover a new-to-me author, but to discover some awesome new subject matter. But the best part for me about The Jinni’s Last Wish, is the magic that is woven throughout the plot. (I couldn’t wait to see what an “Historical Fantasy” novel was…oh my stars, am I hooked.)
The research done on the time era by the author was exemplary, so the novel read stunningly as an historical fiction. But the magic added in to the story made this novel unreservedly spell-binding. The characters were incredibly written, each complex and wonderful, haunting and real. (Here’s looking at you, Olin.) But the story was so brilliantly written, that it stayed with me even after I finished the novel. The Jinni’s Last Wish is one of the most stirring, emotive novels that I have read in a long time. I loved every single word, and hope to the heavens that I get to read more of this author’s work in the future.
