Jasper (Book Two of the Tudor Trilogy) + Giveaway!!

Jasper (The Tudor Trilogy #2) by Tony Riches

Publication Date: March 22, 2016
Preseli Press
eBook & Paperback; 360 Pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

Following the best-selling historical fiction novel OWEN – Book One of The Tudor Trilogy, this is the story, based on actual events, of Owen’s son Jasper Tudor, who changes the history of England forever.

England 1461: The young King Edward of York has taken the country by force from King Henry VI of Lancaster. Sir Jasper Tudor, Earl of Pembroke, flees the massacre of his Welsh army at the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross and plans a rebellion to return his half-brother King Henry to the throne.

When King Henry is imprisoned by Edward in the Tower of London and murdered, Jasper escapes to Brittany with his young nephew, Henry Tudor. Then after the sudden death of King Edward and the mysterious disappearance of his sons, a new king, Edward’s brother Richard III takes the English Throne. With nothing but his wits and charm, Jasper sees his chance to make young Henry Tudor king with a daring and reckless invasion of England.

Set in the often brutal world of fifteenth century England, Wales, Scotland, France, Burgundy and Brittany, during the Wars of the Roses, this fast-paced story is one of courage and adventure, love and belief in the destiny of the Tudors.

My Review: Not long ago, Mr. Tony Riches introduced me to Owen Tudor, who I completely fell head-over-heels in love with. (Which might be weird, beings that he’s my 19th great-grandfather, but who cares?) (You didn’t think I’d let another Tudor post go by without mentioning that, did you? I’m going to ride that pony until it’s dead, y’all.) During Owen, the reader is introduced to young Jasper, who is a grown man by the end of the book. Which meant that I couldn’t wait to dig into book two of “The Tudor Trilogy,” which is all about Mr. Jasper, himself.

As a Tudor lover, I am fairly well acquainted with Jasper. You can’t really study Henry VIII without studying Henry VII…which leads to studies about Margaret Beaufort and Jasper Tudor. (I adore Margaret Beaufort, by the way. Do yourself a favor, and don’t believe her portrayal in “The White Princess.” Actually, don’t believe anything in that show. In fact, just read everything by Tony Riches and you’ll be set.) As to be expected, the author did a fantastic job of bringing Jasper to life.

My first reaction, after finishing this book, was an urge to hug the author. He is just so incredible at staying true to history. The accuracy in his research and his impeccable attention to detail means that his writing doesn’t branch out into weird, fictional tangents. You can know, as you read, that not only are you getting to know the historical person, but also their true story. My next reaction was to sit back and grin like a fool. Not only did the author introduce me to Owen Tudor, but now he had introduced me to Jasper. Once again, he set the scene in such detail that I was able to easily jump into the time-period, which not every author is capable of doing. But then he took some of my most beloved Tudor men and women, and allowed me to live life from their perspective for just a little while; which in turn allowed me to feel like I knew them personally, and understood them just a little bit better.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to grab a bunch of snack food and dive into book three!
