About the Book

Author: Sharlene MacLaren

Genre: Christian Historical Romance (Civil War)

Release Date: Jan 9, 2018

Levi Albright rebelled against his Quaker roots to fight for abolition in the Union army in the first year of the Civil War. Two years later, 19-year-old destitute orphan Josephine Winters, with her chopped hair, boy’s clothes, and new name, “Snipp,” enlists in the Union army out of desperation.

Just over five feet tall and barely weighing as much as a newborn calf, Snipp seems to Levi to be barely old enough to hold “his” gun. But despite being teased by the regiment, Snipp quickly earns admiration for skill with a musket and unequaled bravery. When Levi explains one night that he is a Quaker leading a regiment, it leads to a late-night discussion of faith and a developing friendship.

But Snipp’s secret can only be hidden for so long. After an injury forces Josie to reveal her real identity, Levi is angered by her deception. Worse, Josie is marched out of the company without a chance to explain—or even say goodbye. Will their friendship survive? Or will the hatred saturating the war-torn nation affect even the heart of a peace-loving Quaker?

My Review: This is an historical fiction that is completely different than any I’ve read previously. First, Their Daring Hearts is the second book in the “Forever Freedom” series, but it reads easily as a stand-alone.

Josie, through a series of events, decides that becoming a Union soldier is the right path for her. Her reasons for doing so are honorable, and after disguising herself as a man, she enlists in the army under the name “Snipp.” Despite her small frame, she soon gains the respect of her fellow soldiers for her skill and bravery. (Guys, seriously. When I was 19, I would not have had the guts to join the army. I don’t have the guts now!) I quickly came to admire Josie, and loved her strength and determination. I also fell head-over-heels for the other soldiers, their kind ways and strength of character.

Also, as a side-note, you should seriously Google “Women Who Fought in the Civil War.” It is fascinating. What brave and heroic ladies! I was utterly enthralled by the stories of these women. Some of them enlisted right along with their husbands. Others on their own, for their own reasons. Some got away with it. Some were discovered when they sustained injuries. Some were discovered after they were killed on the battlefield. One story that I thought was absolutely amazing was the story of a woman who was discovered and imprisoned for awhile. Her guard? A woman disguised as a man.

Now, back to our story. Eventually Josie is found out, and is shipped away, without being able to say goodbye to her new friends or explain her reasons for disguising herself. But just as God was with Josie during her time in the army, He is with her in the time that follows, which the author beautifully illustrates. While there is romance in the storyline, it’s a subtle thread in the weave of the plot. The difficulties and hardships of war, the unfairness that life can bring and the tension of a plot twist, all kept me reaching for this book to see what happened next.

I can definitely see why readers have fallen in love with this series and the writing of Sharlene MacLaren. A definite recommend!
