Emma O’Sullivan is one of the first female doctors to enlist after President Franklin Roosevelt signs the order allowing women in the Army and Navy medical corps. Within weeks, Emma is assigned to England to set up a convalescent hospital, and she leaves behind everything that is familiar. When the handsome widower of the requisitioned property claims she’s incompetent and tries to get her transferred, she must prove to her superiors she’s more than capable. But she’s soon drawn to the good-looking, grieving owner. Will she have to choose between her job and her heart?

Archibald “Archie” Heron is the last survivor of the Heron dynasty, his two older brothers having been lost at Dunkirk and Trondheim and his parents in the Blitz. After his wife is killed in a bombing raid while visiting Brighton, he begins to feel like a modern-day Job. To add insult to injury, the British government requisitions his country estate, Heron Hall, for the U.S. Army to use as a hospital. The last straw is when the hospital administrator turns out to be a fiery, ginger-haired American woman. She’s got to go. Or does she?

My Review: This is such a fun and cozy Christmas read! Three novellas in one, all wonderful and uplifting, each with their own depth and memorable characters.

Picking a Bride for Paul was such a fun read for me. My favorite type of romance novels (and admittedly, I’m not the biggest fan of romance) are two characters being thrown together amidst frustrating circumstances (think Janette Oke) OR two characters that are best friends and begin to fall for each other. Paul and Teddy have been friends forever. Only, when Paul’s mother begins pushing him to find a bride, Teddy can’t figure out why this hurts her so much. I absolutely loved Teddy. She isn’t the typical “genteel” woman that is seen so often in this period. Teddy is more tomboy than lady. She isn’t your typical definition of ‘beautiful,’ and doesn’t know how to cook or care for a home. So to see her wrestling with her feelings for Paul (who is equally wrestling with his own feelings) plus trying to prove that she is capable of being a homemaker is pretty lovable, as well as fairly entertaining.

Typhoon Prompting was very good. (I have read work from this author before and am literally never disappointed.) It’s the definition of your ‘perfect’ love story; war, tension, unknowns and love in the midst of it all. I have to admit that I was drawn to this story, as my own grandfather was on his way to the USS Arizona and was redirected when news of the bombing took place. He never liked to talk about his war days, so Jerry’s rough exterior was endearing to me. (Although my papa was the complete opposite of that.) His personality made sense to me. But to see him soften when it came to Evelyn and their letters was the reason I curl up with romance novels to begin with. So very good.

A Dr. In the House was awesome. Archie…who has suffered incredible loss…is not happy when his mansion turns into a temporary hospital during the war. He is even less happy to see Emma, a female doctor, who he thinks is completely incompetent. Emma, on the other hand, is brilliant at what she does and holds her head high. She is fully aware that female doctors are a rarity. She is also completely aware of her skills, as well as Archie’s less than optimistic feelings towards her. Yet, why do they find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other?

In all three novellas, God is at the forefront. Seeking His will, His guidance, His wisdom and His comfort is the theme running throughout the stories, bringing the magic that is Christmas straight into your living room. Or bedroom. Or kitchen. Or coffee shop. Wherever you happen to be reading this book. (I know I am not the only one that reads every chance I get, everywhere I can! #justsayin’)

She volunteers at the Wright Museum of WWII and as a trustee for her local public library.
